Samulnori is deeply rooted within the traditional music and philosophy of the Korean culture.
There are many countries in the world, each with its own specific and unique culture. Culture is not just defined by one thing or aspect. Everything we see, hear, and feel are also influenced by our culture. Korea is a small country of the East but they have their own history and customs that are obviously different from others. I often meet people who are unaware or confused about the countries of Asia. They usually just assume that all the countries have the same culture. But that is definitely not the case. Korea has taken parts of the Chinese culture, but changed it to become Korea’s own style. Korea is a nation that loves music. It is evident in the every day life of Koreans. When people get together they usually drink and go to karaoke. Koreans enjoy singing and dancing with each other when they hang out. It might sound unbelievable, but it is true.
The word ‘Samulnori’ comes from ‘samul’ which means ‘four instruments’ and ‘nori’ which means “playing”. Originally the word “samul” is from Buddhism which refers to instruments they used to use. But as time passed, Samul is composed by ‘Kkwaenggwari’, ‘Ching’, ’Janggo’, ’Buk’ now among many people.
Kkwaenggwari is a small gong made of brass and gold or silver. The gong is hand held and played with a bamboo mallet. Kkwaenggwari is the lead instrument of Samulnori. Kkwaenggwari is the smallest instrument but it has the loudest and highest pitch out of the four instruments. This tone instills a sense of excitement in people. Since Kkwaenggwari leads the Samulnori, it has to be on cue with controlling its tone and tempo. Ching is a larger gong than Kkwaenggwari that is struck with a padded stick. The sound is the most magnificent of the instruments. Buk is a barrel drum. It is made of a piece of hollow wood with two leather skin tied to the wood. The buk provides the base sound for the Samulnori. Janggo is called the hourglass drum because of its shape. Janggo has two sides. One produces a high pitch sounds, the other produces a lower pitch. The Janggo is used in many types of folk music and has various roles.
