Entry Three: EFL setting
Foreign language context are those in which students do not have communication contexts beyond their classroom. So, they should create their proficiency- improving opportunities for themselves except regular curriculum through English clubs, on or off-line meetings, and newspapers or other media. Teaching English in Korea or Japan is almost a context of English as a foreign language (EFL). Therefore, I think teachers have to provide students placed in EFL setting with more English-exposed situations. Here are a few ideas about this.
◆ Take students to English Village in Kyonggi. They can experience a variety of situations such as buying items, using PC zone, and seeing a doctor, etc.
◆ Have students make a cooperation journal. Members of a group is proper in 5~6.
(Mostly English, sometimes Korean)
- Let them read English newspapers and choose one article each among sports, social issues, and economy.
- Have students pass the articles around and read them all from a student to a student.
- Have students talk about the stories on the articles.
- Have the learners poster the articles on the whole sheet of paper and write their own opinion or feelings on them.
◆ Have students see a movie which is loved by teenagers such as Harry porter series and talk about the lines they heard. Write the words they talk on the board. Ask the meanings of the students. With meeting with authentic expression and guessing the meanings, students will be interested in English without burden as well as pick up useful expression.
