Total Physical Response (TPR) is a method by James Asher, a professor of psychology, for teaching a language. This is based on a psychology theory regarding memory, and proves that learners can acquire a language easily as repeating various actions in real life. It does not require to talk to learn a language, but primarily needs to develop an ability of listening comprehension. TPR encourages learners in relieving the tension and reduces stress when they learn a language.
Asher defines TPR is a "Natural Method" because first and second language learning have similar processes. According to the first language learning, the second language learner needs to primarily internalize a "cognitive map" of the language which the learner wants to master through listening exercises. Listening and physical movement accompany at the same time, on the other hand, speaking and other productive abilities happen later than them. For example, even though an infant is not yet speaking, the child is imprinting a linguistic map, that is why the parent and the infant can communicate with physical responses as looking, smiling, and moving before the child utters or speaks.
One of the significant benefits of TPR is stress-free. To learn the foreign language, stress and an obsession are certain to follow up with a dry
and boring class. However, TPR, instant understanding of the target language, regardless of academic aptitude makes learners relaxed and interested through playing games and doing specific activities.
