A small landlocked country in South Asia, Nepal is one of the 49 least developed countries in the world. The country’s per capita income at US$220 in 2000 is one of the lowest in the Asian continent. Nepal has so far not seen either any economic miracle or economic debacle. The per capita income has been growing at little over 2 per cent per annum in a situation where close to nine million people are currently estimated to be living in absolute poverty (UNDP 2002).

A. Przeworski and F. Limongi in their article, mentions “democratization was outcome of actions, not just of conditions.” According to them, the emergence of democracy is not a by-product of economic development. There is not only economic growth that effects democratization but many others. I would like to review on Nepal’s economic and political trend, and analyze its current political transformation in this paper.

Nepal has been experiencing worsening armed conflict since 1996. The law and order situation has been seriously deteriorated which has resulted in the contraction of both government activities and services, especially in the rural areas. This ongoing conflict has caused the loss of about 15,000 human lives and billions rupees worth of physical capital ( estimated on an average 2.2 percent GDP each year after 2001). Besides there direct and explicit costs, there are indirect hidden economic costs, which have reduced the overall growth path of the country- that is there has been a lower level of domestic investment, which retards future economic growth and development. For example, the ADB’s 2004 Quarterly Economic Update of Nepal using the Nepal Macroeconometric model finds that there will be a reduction in economic growth of 1.5-2% per annum.
