The Appreciation of Humanity and the Dignity of Man through Homer’s IliadLiterature in the form of poetry reflects the essential life of humans and often says that humans are noble creatures in the world. This is self-love. Poets use poetry to portray the life of humans and to arouse listeners’ sympathy. The Iliad is a typical epic, and this typical epic’s subject is the life of human being. Homer shows us the understanding of humanity and the dignity of man though the Iliad. To show these things, Homer uses the Trojan War, and there are three factors of the war which reflect the appreciation of humanity and the majesty of human being: man’s rage, love, and the relationship between gods and human. These factors in the story help listeners to appreciate the subtle, realistic man’s life in ancient times that reflects our lives. Also, these factors are correlative to each other and the sources of the Trojan War. Love causes rage, and humans try to solve the problem through the relationship with the gods in the Iliad. Rage, love, and the relationship with gods are always necessary in our life, and we could understand the author’s intention easily. Rage is the common explosion of our emotion to make happenings which affect our lives. Love gives us pain and pleasure. Humans can not live without love so it is necessary and a part of the war. The relationship between the gods and human in the Iliad shows the imperfection and the mortality of man, so the gods arbitrate between them. The results of war and the fates of heroes depend on the gods. Even though the gods control everything during the war, they do not solve the problem completely. The only key to solve the problem is man, and it shows human’s dignity. Homer begins with man’s rage because it results in chance occurrences and accidents, which push the story forward.
