본문내용
Poe was born as an “outcast” according to his own words. Poe did not follow the tradition of his time in writing stories and did not show any moral concern or maintain any Christian faith in this stories. He did not believe that literature should be taught or preached something to readers. Beauty and truth in art were sacred to him. He showed almost heroic efforts as an artist. More than anything else, his contribution to short stories as a writer and critic was great. Latter short story writers were strongly influenced by his theories, especially in creating a single effect and in proving a preconceived design. What he was ingenious for can be found in his frequent usage of double image. By one thing or expression he conveys double meanings to us. By applying a completely different conception, he often suggested other meanings at the same time.
