Korea and Japan are the nearest countries. Two countries have had a similar history, climate for
thousands of years. But two countries have many differences each other. Therefore some people say that
Japan is the closest and the farthest country. Many differences are between Korea and Japan. At this time I
specially looked into the food culture of the two countries. The reason that I looked into the food culture
is that food is most essential to human’s life. Also there are several similarities and differences about the
two country’s food culture. Now let’s see what are the similarities and what are the differences about the
food culture.
Two countries have typical three things in common about the food. First similar thing is that
staple foods of the two countries are rice and miscellaneous grain crop. Both Korea and Japan are
agricultural countries. Therefore Korean and Japanese people mainly eat rice, and the people often eat
many kinds of miscellaneous grain crop ,too. Typical main dish are vary. For example, there are boiled
rice, barley-mixed rice, five-grain rice, water gruel, red bean soup, cooked rice and red beans, and so on.
Second similar thing is that many kinds of food are very similar because of the similar climate. For
example, Korean and Japan people enjoy beef, pork, fish, chicken. And basic seasonings are soy sauce,
soybean paste, vinegar. Finally, Korea and Japan’s mind set are similar. There is a common saying in
two countries. The saying is “Man doesn’t have to enter the kitchen”. It means that cooking is a just
woman’s duty. That is, if man has interest in cooking, most people say that he is very effeminate. But now,
the saying is regarded as a dead language. Nowadays, whether someone is a man or not, more and more
people have a interest in cooking.
