American dream means American equality and social success whoever can make in America society. However because of ‘the wave of Industrial Revolution’ and ‘American Civil War’, American dream became more and more collapsed. In ‘The Great Gatsby’ by F. Scott fitzerald, it showed doubtful prospect about bright future as well as the narrow confrontation between materialism and idealism in America. It was showed in the novel’s regional background called as ‘West Egg’ and ‘East Egg’, which symbolized American east and west area. D.S. Savage said “The Great Gatsby is a parable of innocence and experience” . In this sentence, the innocence means West’s idealism, and the experience means East’s materialism.West people who have pure moral and dream came to East area, but because of corrupt East society makes them frustrated. In this point, Miller said. “In one sense, the moral conflict in the novel is resolved a conflict between East and West-the ancient and corrupt West and the raw but virtuous.”
