Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate an understanding of the symptoms, causes, types, treatments of Hearing impairment.
- Identify what it is like to be an immigrant with hearing impairment in Australia and affects of cultural changes in leisure time.
- Identify already existing and available support services for immigrant student (ESL) with Hearing loss.
- Outline the limitations of recreational activities and demonstrate specific examples and issues in leisure area.
- Develop an understanding and knowledge of how a hearing impairment effects psychological and social life.
- Define the role of a leisure professional and example of leisure activities.

WHY HEARING IMPAIRMENT?

There are many people who have hearing impairment live around in our society. But I don’t have depth knowledge of their disability, even general knowledge of symptoms, causes, medical treatment, hearing aids and so on, and how does such disability impact on their life, especially in their leisure area. I have an immigrant friend “David Won Il Lee”, who has hearing impairment. I have been known him for while, but still don’t understand and know about what it is like to be disability immigrant in Australia and what kind of barriers, difficulties, problems and distresses in leisure life he is facing with.
