"Korean soldiers, please get out of here. I don’t want to die. I don’t want to die. I know that your life is important, but my life is important," said South Korean hostage, Kim Sun-Il, begging for his life and hoping his government will withdraw troops from Iraq ("Seoul to Send Troops"). South Koreapresident Roh Moo-Hyun committed to send 3,000 troops to Irbil area in northern Iraqin early August of 2004, and there have already been 675 South Korean medical and engineering troops since May of 2004 in the south, around Nasiriya (Hwang, Balbina). The result of this brought the death of an innocent hostage, Kim Sun-Il, and afterwards the kidnappers threatened that they would send the head of the hostage to South Korea if they do not change their plan and withdraw their troops within 24 hours ("Seoul to Send Troops"). The US government mentioned that South Korea will be the largest coalition partner after the US and Britain when complete dispatching of South Korean 3,000 troops in Iraq(Hwang, Balbina). However, there is growing public pressure on the government to cancel the troop’s deployment. A recent poll taken of Uri party members indicated that 70 percent of the party’s incoming legislators do not want to send troops to Iraq (Demick). Thus, there iscontroversy on whether or not South Korean military troops should remain in Iraq.
