완벽하지 못한 비평가들에는 A. C. 스윈번(A. C. Swinburne), 조지 윈담(George Wyndham), 찰스 위블리(Mr. Charles Whibley), 폴 모어(Paul More), 줄리엔 벤다(M. Julien Benda) 등이 있다.
완벽한 비평가(The Perfect Critic), 2.

As Mr. More has pointed out in an interesting essay, there is a vital weakness in Arnold`s definition of criticism as "the disinterested endeavour to know the best that is known and thought in the world, irrespectively of practice, politics, and everything of the kind," The "disinterested endeavour to know" is only a prerequisite of the critic, and is not criticism, which may be the result of such an endeavour. Arnold states the work of the critic merely in terms of the personal ideal, an ideal for oneself―and an ideal for oneself is not disinterested. Here Arnold is the Briton rather than the European (42-3).
