Act I - Walking On Egg Shells
Long Day`s Journey Into Night, writer`s biographical drama, begins in August, 1912, at the summer home of the Tyrone family. The setting for all four acts is the family`s living room, which is adjacent to the kitchen and dining room. Long Day`s Journey begins as a pleasant, peaceful domestic drama might begin, quite obviously similar, in fact, to O`Neill`s own domestic comedy Ah, Wilderness! One might assume that this was going to be a comedy about two `regular fellers` and their happily-married mon and dad. It is morning; the family has had breakfast; Tyrone and Mary enter together smiling and teasing each other quite lovingly, with the two sons heard laughing in the dining room. But little is missing from the scene of domestic tranquility. As the act progresses, however, we notice hints that all is not well beneath the surface, and that the three men are desperately trying to sustain the calm facade.
