(1) There is no doubt communication takes part in our lives. People get to know each other through conversations. They solve their problems by expressing their opinions and thoughts. Also, they make friends through talking when going to new places. When I first came to America, my school life was perfect. I made a lot of friends and joined some sports clubs to play in. Teachers were very kind to me and ESL (English of Second Language) classes were not that hard. Above all, the fine California weather made me really comfortable. However, I did not want to go back to my host family’s house. It was because the daughter of my host parents, Nancy, gave me a hard time whenever I stayed at home. For her, “A [Korean] man in my house was not something I looked forward to” (Cathedral 327), as in the story, Cathedral, written by Raymond Carver, where the husband did not like the blind man.
(2)Cathedral has a great lesson about communication. While I was reading through the story, I found out that the situations of three characters in the story were quite similar to my experience. I would be the “blind man”, Robert, since I was not happily accepted by one of my host family members. My host parents would be the “wife” who loved her husband but did not know what to do with him. The host family daughter, Nancy, would be the “husband” who is causing a problem in the house. The problem that the husband had was that he tends to avoid having conversations with others and just listened instead. Since he was not sharing his thoughts with others, he looked at every matter from only one point of view, which prevents him from having different views on the matter.
