On December 10, 2007, I entered through the doors of Digital Library Auditorium to attend a concert titled “Hot Jazz on a Cool December Night” which was performed by students and faculty. It was my second jazz concert that I have attended in America. I had a really good time at my first jazz concert so I was very excited to see that kind of concert again. The recital consisted of three main groups and performances which were Jazz Ensemble, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Vocal jazz ensemble and RCC Evening jazz Ensemble.
To start with, students who are majoring brass, drums, and guitar performed four songs. They played according to their one of the faculties. They seemed to be very prepared well with the songs.
After a short intermission, I heard six songs performed by the vocal students jazz ensemble. The first song “Born to Be Blue” started with a fast tempo, which produced a lively mood in the auditorium. The two singers sometimes sang back and forth, taking turns as soloists. “O Christmas Tree” was very familiar to me. Because the song was often used in commercials, it was easy for me to recognize that song. In addition, even though the song was performed by many singers, they sounded like one voice. The singers made the song very quiet, but still quiet. After hearing this, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and “If You Love Someone” were performed in a row.
