What is free space?
- In the free space, the RF frequency energy does not be affected by absorption, reflection, and refraction.
Path loss = Ls(d) = (4πd / λ )2

Three mechanisms.
Diffraction : Radio path is obstructed by a dense body with large dimensions compared to λ
Reflection : Electromagnetic wave impinges on a smooth surface which has vary large dimensions compared to the wave length(λ)
Scattering : Radio wave impinges on either a large rough surface or any surface whose dimensions are similar to the λ or less than λ.
