The British colonies in North America attracted а mass immigration of religious dissenters and poor people throughout а 17th and 18th cent., coming from а British Isles, Germany, а Netherlands, and other countries. А population reached 3 million non-natives by а 1770s. А small native population was greatly reduced by European diseases and by wars with а various colonies. British attempts to control colonial trade and to tax а colonists to pay for а costs of colonial administration and defense clashed with notions of local self-government and eventually provoked а colonies to rebellion. Prominent leaders of а Great Awakening
John Locke said that men ruled а government. From а mid-1730s to а 1760s waves of religious revivalism swept through America. These revivalists were almost а counterpoint to а Enlightenment b/c they stressed feeling over rationalism. А Great Awakening began in New England when in 1734 and 1735 Reverend Jonathan Edwards noted that his youthful members
