People who oppose to the death penalty emphasize that the death penalty has no deterrent effect. They maintain that claims that each execution deters a certain number of murders have been thoroughly discredited by social science research. People commit murders largely in the heat of passion, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or because they are mentally ill, giving little or no thought to the possible consequences of their acts. Very few plan their crimes beforehand. Additionally, many people think that the death penalty is cruel and unusual punishment no matter what method of execution. Even though the latest technique, lethal injection is known as more humane, efficient, and inexpensive than others, there have been three botched injection executions since 1985. (ACLU,2007)
Even though many activists maintain that the death penalty must be abolished, according to Amnesty International, 62 countries retain and use the death penalty, most often as a punishment for people convicted of murder (Amnesty International, 2008).
