I shall therefore propound answer to my four questions such as I think any present-day historian would accept.

Here they will be rough and ready answers, but they will serve for a provisional definition of our subject-matter and they will be defended and elaborated as the argument proceeds.

(a) What is history?
역사란 무엇인가?
Every historian would agree, I think, that history is a kind of research or inquiry.
대부분의 역사가들은 아마 역사가 조사 혹은 탐구의 한 종류라는데 동의할 것이다.
What kind of inquiry it is I do not yet ask.
어떤 종류의 탐구인지에 대한 질문은 아직 하지 않겠다.
The point is that generically it belongs to what we call the sciences: that is, the forms of thought whereby we ask questions and try to answer them.
중요한 사실은, 일반적으로 역사는 우리가 과학이라고 부르는: (우리가 질문을 하고 대답을 도출해 나가기 위한 일련의 과정의 형태)의 한 종류라는 것이다.
Science in general, it is important to realize, does not consist in collecting what we already know and arranging it in this or that kind of pattern.
일반적으로 과학에서 우리가 이미 알고 있는 것들에 대한 패턴을 배열, 수집하는 것이 아닌
인식하고 깨닫는 것이 중요하다.
It consists in fastening upon some-thing we do not know, and trying to discover it.
