본문내용
제가 맡아서 할 부분은 버지니아 울프가 강조한 “마음의 통일성(the unity of the mind)”에 대한 것입니다.
6장 처음 부분에 묘사된 대로 런던의 생경한 풍경 속에서 런던 거리를 지나는 사람은 서로에게 관심이 없다. 또한 여성에게도 관심이 없다. 각각 자신들의 일에 취한 그들을 보면서 화자는 마치 강이 흘러가는 듯한 기분을 느낀다. 즉, 모든 사람 안에 내제되어 있는 남성성과 여성성의 쌍방향 교류 없이, 남성은 남성성만을 여성은 여성성만을 고집하는 우리 마음의 일방통행의 모습을 나 아닌 다른 사람에게는 무관심한 런던 사람들에 빗대어 표현하고 있는 것이다.
그러나 그녀는 6장에서 한 여성과 남성, 그리고 택시가 한 곳에 멈추어 그 택시로 남과 여 두 성이 함께 들어가는 것을 보며 그 전에는 느끼지 못했던 ‘마음의 통일성’이라는 것을 느낀다. 그리고 과연 그 마음의 통일성이란 무엇인가에 대한 질문을 던진다.

and the fact that the ordinary sight of two people getting into a cab had the power to communicate something of their own seeming satisfaction. ... Perhaps to think, as I had been thinking these two days, of one sex as distinct from the other is an effort. It interferes with the unity of the mind. Now that effort had ceased and that unity had been restored by seeing two people come together and get into a taxi cab.

Why does one mean by `the unity of the mind`?
