Elizabethan was the English Renaissance era that begins the changes of from "A God-centered philosophy" to "A Man-centered philosophy (humanism)". This was also the time when Shakespeare composed his plays. During the Elizabethan period, people started to have contradictions between the Patriarchal ideology and the Humanism. The Patriarchal ideology is the one that tried to put the clock back against the current situation. The Humanism emphasized on the fairness of women getting educated while the patriarchal ideology focused on women should be governed by men and obedience is the best virtue of women. According to John Knox who was the protestant leader, "Women in her greatest perfection was made to serve and obey man." However, women that time were getting more resistant on the patriarchism even though they got punishments; it caused men became more oppression and restriction toward women than before.
