In the world, there are a variety of folk tales as well as many nations. Some folk tales have similar contents although they are generated from different countries. But, others sometimes represent their own culture. Korea also has lots of folk tales that have interesting and various subject matters. In this essay, the story that I will introduce is ‘Heungboo and Nolboo’. It is supposed to be originally derived from ‘Heungboo-jeon’, a novel in the Josun Dynasty and passed on by word of mouth.
Once upon a time, there were Heungboo and Nolboo. The older brother, Nolboo, was rich and the younger brother, Heungboo, was poor. Even though Nolboo was rich, he did not help the paupers but Heungboo helped people even though he did not have enough food for his family. One day an injured swallow was found in Heungboo’s house. He cured the swallow and set it free. After a few days, the swallow came to his home and gave him pumpkin seeds. So, he raised the pumpkin and it grew very large-more and more. Heungboo cut it and there was a lot of gold in it. In the end, he was rich. When Nolboo heard about Heungboo story, he was jealous so he tried to do the same as Heungboo. Nolboo broke a swallow`s leg on purpose cured it and set it free. Later the swallow came to his home and gave him pumpkin seeds. After the pumpkin grew as large as Heungboo`s, Nolboo cut it and monsters came out. The monsters took all the wealth from Nolboo and destroyed Nolboo`s house
