We all consider ourselves to be unique individuals, each with a set of personal opinions, preferences, habits, and quirks. Indeed, all of us are unique individuals, and yet most of us share a surprising number of feelings, beliefs, and habits with other members of our society. The characteristics we share, many of which we take for granted and never think about, constitute what anthropologists refer as our culture.
When we compare ourselves with people in other societies, we become especially aware of cultural differences and similarities. For example, most societies known to anthropologists think it is perfectly correct, and even desirable, for a man to have more than one wife at a time. In our society we do not allow this kind of marriage, but it is perfectly legal for a man or women to marry a series of spouses, provided he or she is not married to more than one spouse at a time. We may have different opinions about whether we want to marry at all or, if we do choose to marry, about the kind of person we want to have as a marriage partner. But hardly anyone in our society would question why it is not possible here to be married couples in most societies live with, or next door to, one set of in-laws. In our society, most newly married couples do not live very near their in-laws and, in fact, prefer to avoid such an arrangement.
