This study aims to identify the characteristics of supervisors in the social work arena bytypes. In order to accomplish the purpose of this study, it used the Q method. It explored
the preference of 34 undergraduate students who finished social work practicum.
As a result, it was generally classified into four desirable supervisors types; ‘professional
and educational type’, ‘moral and practice type’, ‘open-mind and respect type’ and
‘independence and supporting type’.
Regarding the characteristics of each type, type I means that supervisors have maintained
the professional knowledge and skills and, at the same time, they should be able to discover
the full potential of students. Type II intends that should provide role model to be moral and
ethical. Type III means that supervisors and students can easily meet each other on the
basis of mutual respect. Type IV intends that supervisor ensures students' autonomy to find
their own way. On the other hands, students, in general, expressed antipathy for oppressive
supervisors.
In conclusion, this study suggests a basic guideline for supervisors in social work
practicum in order to achieve the original purpose of field education and satisfy social work
students’ needs.
