이 연구는 오늘날의 비통한 사회 현실에서 사람들이 자신의 영성을 회복하고 긴장과 갈등을
넘어서는 인간관계를 실현하는 데, Parker Palmer의 신뢰서클 경험이 어떤 함의를 갖는지를 탐
색하는 질적 사례연구이다. 이를 위해 Palmer가 창안한 미국의 가르칠 수 있는 용기 피정과 한
국 자매 프로그램인 마음비추기 피정의 신뢰서클에 대한 연구자의 참여관찰 경험과 참가자들의
참여 기록을 분석하였다. 내면의 교사에 대한 믿음을 전제로 열리는 신뢰서클에서 참가자들의 영
성 회복에 작용하는 주요 원리 및 요소들로는 초대의 방식, ‘신뢰서클의 주춧돌’, 계절의 은유와
제 3의 것, 침묵 그리고 퀘이커 방식의 명료화모임에서 시도하는 정직하고 열린 질문 등이 있었
다. 참가자들은 이 원리를 기반으로 신뢰서클에 참여하는 동안, 자기 내적인 관계는 물론 타인과
의 인간관계에서 새로운 변화를 경험하였다. 서로의 진실을 듣는 경청, 타인의 내면에 초대되는
신뢰 깊은 인간관계, 그리고 자연을 포함해 숨겨진 전체성에 연결되는 관계의 확장 등이 경험의
주요 측면이었다. 이는 갈등과 긴장이 높은 비통한 사회 현실에서도 타자를 환대하고 존중하는
인간관계가 가능함을 시사해 준다.

영어 초록

These days, people living in the heart-broken society with many desperate
accidents want to reconnect to one's spirituality. To be specific, people want
their mind and body to be stable and peaceful, and to recharge inner power to
deal with tensions and conflicts in the outer world. For that purpose, Parker
Palmer created a retreat program called “Circles of Trust” which have been held
in 'Courage to Teach retreats', and given chances to connect to spirituality, and
to have deeply supportive relationships as well. This study is a qualitative case
study on Parker Palmer's Circles of Trust exploring its spirituality and impacts
on participant‘s experiences related to human relationships. For that,
participant’s experiences of two retreat programs were analyzed: one is Courage
to Teach(CTT) Retreat in U.S.A,, and the other is Gardening Peoples' Heart
Retreat in Korea which is a sister program of CTT. Palmer's “Circles of Trust“
are based on two beliefs: first, each person has inner teacher, and second,
community is necessary to connect to one's inner teacher. With the beliefs,
Circles of Trust have core principles and factors that work for participant's
reconnection to spirituality. Some key factors found by this study are; the
approach of invitation, the Touchstones of Circles of Trust, the metaphor of
seasons and the third things, silence, and the Clearness Committee using honest
open questions. And it is also found that participants experienced some changes
in their relationships on intrapersonal level, interpersonal level, and whole
human relationship level. Participants experienced deep listening to the other
person's inner voice, deep trust and respect on other person, and broad
extension of relationship similar to the connection of the hidden wholeness.
Through those experiences, participants can become open to the potentials to
have respectful and hospitable human relationship in the tragic gap of many
tensions and conflicts even in the heart-broken society.
