THE STORY STARTS WITH ART RATHER THAN TECHNOLOGY
A myth from Ancient Greece tells of the artist Pygmalion who sculpted an ivory statue of a woman so beautiful that he fell in love with it. He became so desperate to make his love real that he petitioned Aphrodite, the goddess of love to breathe life into the statue. And, the story goes, she did. Life was a gift, and a mystery, of the gods. In a parallel story, Hephaestus(or Vulcan), an ugly lame smith and the closest thing the Greeks had to a god of technology, gave life to two female statues of pure gold. Their functions were to act as cupbearers on Mount Olympus, making them the first example of mechanical servants, a theme that runs through so many subsequent stories. The legendary Greek designer Daedalus - he whose son flew too close to the sun - was said by Aristotle to have created moving statues that guarded the entrance to the Labyrinth in Crete.
